Texas Tech Baseball: Breaking Down The Lubbock Regional

BREWSTER, MA - AUGUST 11: Zac Susi of the Bourne Braves warms up in the on deck circle during game one of the Cape Cod League Championship Series against the Brewster Whitecaps at Stony Brook Field on August 11, 2017 in Brewster, Massachusetts. The Cape Cod League was founded in 1885 and is the premier summer baseball league for college athletes. Over 1100 of these student athletes have gone on to compete in MLB including Chris Sale, Carlton Fisk, Joe Girardi, Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Varitek. The chance to see future big league stars up close makes Cape Cod League games a popular activity for the families in each of the 10 towns on the Cape to host a team. Each team is a non-profit organization, relying on labor from volunteers and donations from spectators to run each year. (Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

Louisville Cardinals 43-17 Overall; 18-12 ACC

After reaching the championship game of the ACC Tournament, Louisville is on a roll.  Unlike Texas Tech, the Cardinals are playing their best baseball of the year going 14-3 in the last 17 games.

Louisville features a very good pitching staff that has compiled a 3.26 ERA in 2018.  That group is headed by two starters with sub 3.0 earned-run-averages.

Adam Wolf, a junior from Ohio has gone 7-2 with a 2.26 ERA in 15 starts this season.  He is averaging 7 strikeouts per game and only surrendered two homers.  It will be fascinating to see if he can keep the ball in the park this weekend if the west Texas wind blows out to left field as is so often the case.

The Card’s second starter, Nick Bennett has an even better ERA 2.20 and an 8-1 record in 13 appearances (10 starts).  He is allowing an opponents batting average of .196 and has given up just three homers.

But offensively, the Cardinals have been limited.  Only five hitters in their lineup have an average over .300 with junior outfielder Josh Stowers hitting .341 with a team-best nine homers and 59 RBI.

But as a team, Louisville has only 38 homers and a .299 team batting average.  By contrast, Tech has blasted 73 homers and has a team average of .309.

Louisville has faced some tough competition in the ACC taking two of three games from then No. 13 North Carolina.  Conversely, they dropped series to No. 10 Clemson and No. 5 Florida State while splitting a pair with No. 6 Kentucky.
