Sunday, Tyrique Matthews, a three-star linebacker committed to the Texas Tech football program becoming the eighth member of the 2019 class.

The Texas Tech football 2019 recruiting class continued its rapid growth on Sunday.  After not having a player commit since October, Texas Tech has added seven new commits in the past week.

One of the latest, and most highly-touted, is Aldine, Texas linebacker Tyrique Matthews who verbally pledged to the Red Raiders Sunday.  Matthews is rated a three-star player and the No. 49 inside linebacker in the nation.

However, the No. 176 player in Texas has an offer list lacking any Power 5 schools aside from Tech.  Schools such as SMU, North Texas, UTSA and Army were also in on Matthews.

An interesting prospect because that could play either inside or outside linebacker, Matthews brings quite a bit to the table.  In fact, while 247Sports.com has him pegged as an inside LB, Rivals.com has him ranked as the No. 31 outside LB in the nation and No. 79 player in Texas.

At just 5-foot-10 and 200-pounds, Matthews may be a bit undersized to play inside.  For comparison sake, current the Texas Tech starting linebacker duo of Dakota Allen and Jordyn Brooks both tip the scales at 235-pounds.

But what Matthews lacks in statue, he makes up for in speed.  He has fantastic instincts for the ball and is exceptionally quick once he makes his reads.

And given that there is excellent depth at the linebacker position with Brooks and future star LB Riko Jeffers slated to be on campus in 2019, Matthews could have the luxury of redshirting to add the kind of muscle he will need in the Big 12.

Matthews is the second linebacker to commit to Texas Tech this week.  Sachse, Texas linebacker Bryce Robinson, a two-star recruit verbally pledged to the Red Raiders on June 11th.

The Red Raiders are expected to sign a full defensive class after inking only one defensive player in the 2018 class.  Matthews becomes the fourth defensive commit thus far in the current class meaning there will be plenty more additions to the 2019 defensive class.  Keep coming back to Wreck ‘Em Red for all the latest on the Texas Tech football program.
