Keeyon Stweart, a defensive back from Houston verbally committed to the Texas Tech football program Sunday adding another key piece to the 2019 class.

The pieces of the 2019 Texas Tech football recruiting class continue to fall into place at break-neck speed.  After picking up four commitments earlier in the week, Kliff Kingsbury saw three more high school prospects join the Red Raider camp Sunday

One of those players is Houston, Texas defensive back Keeyon Stewart.  The 5-foot-11, 160-pound three-star prospect chose Texas Tech over offers from Houston, Utah, UMass, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, Texas State, UTEP and Wyoming.

Stewart was the first defensive back to join the Red Raiders’ 2019 class but he was soon joined by Markel Reed who verbally committed on Monday.  Landing quality defensive backs is a must for Texas Tech in the current class because in 2018, Kingsbury and his staff chose to sign only one defensive recruit, linebacker Xavier Benson.

Additionally, there will be a significant need for reinforcements in the defensive backfield following this season. Four Texas Tech defensive backs, Jah’Shawn Johnson, Kisean Allen, Octavius Morgan and Vaughnte Dorsey are seniors this year and all could play significant roles in the team’s two-deep rotation.

Of course, quality defensive backs are a must-have in the pass-happy Big 12 and in recent years, Texas Tech defensive coordinator David Gibbs has used a base defense consisting of five defensive backs and only two linebackers.  Thus, there could be an opportunity for young defensive backs like Stewart to see the field early in their careers.

Stewart’s commitment continues the Red Raiders’ hot streak on the recruiting front.  Since June 11, the Texas Tech football class has welcomed eight new members with four being on the defensive side of the ball.

Given the small size of the 2018 signing class, it is expected that Tech will sign a large class this year so there will certainly be more news from the recruiting trail this summer.  Keep checking in with Wreck ‘Em Red for all the latest.
