Receiver

The last position group still needing to be addressed is receiver.  Though Texas Tech has three receivers already committed, adding at least one more to the mix would be wise, especially at inside receiver.

Two of the three current receiver commits, Cameron Cantrell and Trey Cleveland are outside receivers while the other commit, La’Vontae Shenault could play either inside or outside but is being cast as a slot receiver for now.

Still, Tech needs to add players at inside receiver.  After losing both starters in the slot from last year, Tech will likely turn to seniors like De’Quan Bowman, Seth Collins and Zach Austin to fill those spots.

Thus, there will be plenty of snaps available at inside receiver in 2019.  And that is a position that could be considered the marquee position in the offense at Texas Tech.  In every season since 2013, Kingsbury’s first, a slot receiver has led the team in receiving yards.

First it was Jakeem Grant (2014-15) followed by Jonathan Giles (2016) and Keke Coutee (2017).  With Coutee now in the NFL and Giles transferring to LSU, there is suddenly a hold at inside receiver making it essential to land a star slot receiver in 2019.

Keep a close eye on Odessa Permian 4-star athlete Peyton Powell.  The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder has an offer from Texas Tech and has put the Red Raiders in his top 10 schools.

Powell has set a commitment date of August 13 and Texas Tech will be squarely in the mix.  Also vying for his services are Ohio State, Oklahoma, TCU, Arkansas, Texas and a host of other programs.

The current high school QB would be a potential star in the slot for the Red Raiders.  He is one of the most dynamic athletes in Texas and is rated the No. 42 player in Texas.
