Four True Freshman That Could Have Impact In 2018
Wide Receiver – Myller Royals 6-foot-5, 180-pounds
The strength of the 2018 Texas Tech signing class was the wide receiver position. One of the most coveted signees in that class was Abilene, Texas native Myller Royals.
The lanky pass-catcher arrived in Lubbock at the start of the spring semester allowing him to learn the offense during spring practices. He comes off of a prolific high school career that saw him catch 177 passes for 2,980 yards and 26 touchdowns in three seasons at Cooper High School where he holds virtually every receiving record.
Royals is considered by many to be a clone to Texas Tech’s rising star sophomore wide receiver T.J. Vasher who emerged as the team’s top outside threat last season. Vasher is the unquestioned lead dog of the 2018 receiving corps but behind him, there is an opportunity for playing time.
That is where Royals figures to be a factor. Royals will have to fend of competition from veterans like Antoine Wesley and up-and-coming redshirt freshman Dalton Rigdon who turned heads in the spring.
But at 6-foot-5 and 180-pounds, Royals has the prototypical size for an outside wide receiver. He has the length to be a huge target in the red zone and a chain-mover on third downs.
Royals had offers from Baylor and UCLA but decided to stay close to home where his family could watch him play. Now, there appears to be a need for this young and talented wide receiver to contribute right away in 2018.
