Wide Receiver – Erik Ezukanma 6-foot-3, 180-pounds

Texas Tech raided the back yard of one of its most hated rivals, TCU, to land perhaps its top 2018 high school signee.  Ft. Worth native Erik Ezukanma was rated a 4-star prospect and chose Tech over Arkansas, Houston, Missouri, Ole Miss, TCU, Texas A&M, Utah, Washington State and Wisconsin.

And it is easy to see why he was so highly coveted.  As a high school star, Ezukanma amassed 2,471 yards and 32 touchdowns in three seasons.

He was listed as the No. 53 wide receiver in the nation and a top 50 overall player in Texas.  And as fate would have it, there is an opportunity for him to win a starting spot at Texas Tech this year.

In June, junior wide receiver Quan Shorts was dismissed from the team.  Many expected Shorts to have the inside track for the starting spot at the second outside receiver position opposite Vasher.

Now, that spot is wide open with no clear leader as fall camp nears.  Other candidates to win the job include sixth-year senior Ja’Deion High and junior Donta Thompson (who will also see time in the slot to utilize his large frame).

Recently, the Dallas Morning News named Ezukanma as a 2018 recruiting gem.  He is the type of receiver Texas Tech has become famous for producing and he arrives at a time when the program is searching for playmakers on offense.

As a summer enrollee, Ezukanma was not on hand in the spring as Royals was so the fall camp will be even more important for him as he attempts to learn the offense and gel with the quarterbacks.  Still, many expect Ezukanma to be a factor at Texas Tech and no one will be surprised if he makes an impact early in 2018.
