Corner Adrian Frye

Pressed into action unexpectedly in a hostile environment against one of the most prolific passing attacks in the nation, redshirt freshman corner Adrian Frye had to grow up fast Saturday night. After staring quarterback Des Smith left the game with a hamstring injury in the first quarter, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Frye was asked to check Oklahoma State’s leading receiver Tylan Wallace.

In the first half, OSU quarterback Taylor Cornelius had success exploiting that matchup.  Wallace had a big night statistically with 123 yards on seven receptions but as the game wore on, Frye settled in and helped take Wallace out of the game as OSU amassed less than 100 yards of offense after half time.

Considering that Frye entered the season as the third-string corner on his side of the ball, he was not expected to have to play such a critical role in 2018.  But a season-ending keen injury to starter Octavious Morgan bumped Frye up to second-team and on Saturday night, his number was called in a critical moment.

Frye is a raw player.  Though he has been repeatedly mentioned by the coaching staff as a young player that they are excited about, he is not ready to be a full-time starter in the Big 12 yet.

However, what he may lack in experience, he made up for in fight.  Frye displayed the short memory that a defensive back in the Big 12 must have and he battled all night long.

And late in the 4th quarter, his efforts were rewarded as he picked off Cornelius to put the final nail in the OSU coffin.  Frye was thrown into the fire in a hostile environment and was tested time and time again by the Cowboys.

Though he was far from perfect, the freshman held his own and grew up right before our eyes.   The future is bright for Adrian Frye as it was easy to see why on Saturday as his grit and fight were deserving of a game ball.
