Texas Tech football: Breaking down 2019 early signings
Biggest risk – OT Trevor Roberson
One of the most fascinating prospects in the entire state this year is Wellington, Texas native Trevor Roberson. The massive 7-foot-tall, 350-pound offensive tackle is a physical specimen unlike any ever seen in Lubbock.
He is rated as a three-star prospect and the No. 46 tackle in the nation. He picked Tech over Arkansas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Iowa State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, TCU, USC and Virginia.
But there are some factors that make him a true boom or bust signee. First of all, he played at the 2-A level where he never saw a player capable of challenging him physically.
What’s more, his size could actually be a hindrance. It will be interesting to see if he is able to get low enough to be an effective run blocker and whether or not he has the foot speed to block elite speed rushers.
Roberson will certainly be looked at as a project and should red shirt next season as Tech will be featuring two senior tackles in Travis Bruffy and Terence Steele. During that time, he must work to drop some baby weight and it would be nice to see his playing weight drop to about 330-pounds.
But while he is a risk, he could also turn into the most physically dominant offensive lineman in recent memory. Tech has struggled with defections and attrition on the offenisve line in recent signing classes so finding several contributors in this class is essential.
Tech needs an infusion of talent up front but so far has signed only two offensive linemen. Roberson is ranked as the No. 3 prospect to sign with the program this December behind Ibeneme and Koontz and he certainly represents the biggest risk vs. reward proposition in the 2019 class.
