Texas Tech football: Breaking down 2019 early signings
Teachers’ pet – QB Maverick McIvor
Everyone knows that person from their high school days that was undoubtedly the teachers’ favorite and in this class, that appears to be three-star QB Maverick McIvor from San Angelo. That is because he seems to already have developed a special relationship with OC David Yost.
McIvor committed to Tech this summer but reopened his recruitment when Kingsbury was fired. It is natural for a quarterback to be concerned about his relationship with his head coach and offensive coordinator, especially during a transition and McIvor had to be won over by the new staff.
He was a huge fan of Kingsbury and wanted to work with the college football “QB whisperer”. But if Kingsbury is not an option, Yost might be the next best thing.
While at Missouri, he mentored three NFL quarterbacks including Blaine Gabbert and Chase Daniel while also helping coach Oregon star QB Justin Herbert while serving as the Ducks QB coach in 2016. And after meeting with McIvor, Yost was able to secure the dual-threat QB’s recommitment to the Red Raiders helping fill the most important spot in the class.
Tech could not afford to have another recruiting class that did not include a QB as was the case in 2015. We saw this year how important QB depth is so bringing in a quality passer in every class is essential.
McIvor is recovering from surgery to repair torn knee ligaments and will almost certainly sit out next year. But there is a clear path of succession for him to take over at QB once the Alan Bowman era comes to an end. As a result, he is likely going to spend plenty of time with Yost learning the system and hopefully developing into the next star QB on the South Plains.
