No. 2 – QB Maverick McIvor

In the 2015 class, Texas Tech did not sign a QB.  In 2018, that came back to haunt Kingsbury when injuries decimated the most important position on the roster.

And in the days after Kingsbury was axed, it looked like 2019 could be another class without a QB signee.  That’s because 3-star San Angelo product Maverick McIvor decomitted after being a Red Raider pledge since last summer.

McIvor was rumored to be interested in USC where Kingsbury was the offensive coordinator for about a month before heading to the NFL.  But despite the fact that he held an offer from the Trojans, the dual-threat QB who suffered a season-ending knee injury in September recommitted to the Red Raiders after meeting with Matt Wells and David Yost.

McIvor has been compared to former Texas Tech QB Seth Doege and not just because both were West Texas products who suffered torn knee ligaments in high school.  Both were considered among the best dual-threat QB’s in their respective classes and in-fact, McIvor is the No. 19 dual-threat QB this year.

Therefore, he might be a perfect fit in Yost’s offense.  Last year, Utah State’s QB Jordan Love ran the ball 43 times for 136 yards and seven touchdowns and eventually, McIvor could be used in a similar manner.

But of course, we should not have to see McIvor in that role for at least two more years so long as Alan Bowman remains healthy.  But as we learned last season, QB health is never a given in college football and by signing Maverick McIvor, Tech has added another quality option at the game’s most important position.

After not signing a QB in 2015 and moving 2017’s only high school QB signee, Xavier Martin, to receiver, Tech could not afford another class without a QB.  Eventually, McIvor could be the next West Texas product to lead the Red Raiders but let’s hope that isn’t until at least 2021.
