Texas Tech football: 5 Preferred walk-on’s that could eventually play for Red Raiders
RB Chux Nwabuko
Texas Tech has long been known for getting the most out of undersized offensive stars. Players like Wes Welker, Eric Morris, Tyrone Thurman and Jakeem Grant all became fan favorites because of their ability to make big plays despite being considered by most to be too small for major college football.
The next pint-sized Red Raider offensive star could be running back Chux Nwabuko, a preferred walk-on from Hutto, Texas. The 5-foot-6, 150-pounder is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com but because of his size, he had no major college offers.
The dynamic speedster was one of the most productive running backs in the state amassing 3,806 total yards and 54 touchdowns in his high school career. He also averaged 31.1 yards per kickoff return.
Tech is compiling some impressive speed at the running back position where sophomore Taz’Hawn Henry and 3-star 2019 signee Alante Brown, a converted high school QB from Chicago, Illinois, will join Nwabuko to give the Red Raiders plenty of explosive options in the back field. And that could be important in new OC David Yost’s system which relies more heavily on the ground game than Kingsbury’s version of the “Air Raid”.
If Nwabuko were a couple inches taller and twenty pounds heavier, he would have had plenty of decent scholarship offers. But because many programs feel he is too small to play running back in college, Tech may have found another under-sized offensive playmaker to torment opposing defenses.
