LB Chance Cover

Picking Texas Tech over Army, 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker Chance Cover from Ft. Worth was a nice pickup for the Red Raiders.  According to Max Preps, he racked up 74 tackles in 2018 while also playing tight end for Nolan Catholic.

Cover could have taken one of nine scholarship offers including ones from Texas State, Stephen F. Austin and Air Force but he decided to try to make his way in the Big 12 as a walk-on.  And he is stepping into an absolutely loaded linebacker room in Lubbock.

Despite losing Dakota Allen after last season, Tech still has Riko Jeffers, Jordyn Brooks and Xavier Benson in the middle of the defense.  And this year, the Red Raiders added Tyrique Matthews and Bryce Robinson, both of which are solid three-star prospects.

But working in Cover’s favor is the fact that new defensive coordinator Keith Patterson will utilize more linebackers in his 3-4 scheme which will have as many as two more linebackers on the field at a time than the scheme preferred by his predecessor David Gibbs, who most often had only two on the field.

Cover is a big, athletic and versatile player who is a Big 12 caliber athlete.  He will most certainly be a fantastic scout team addition and could eventually become a linebacker that makes his way on to the field for the Red Raiders.
