RB Zachary Evans – Houston, TX

Speaking of big fish, Tech has offered one of the biggest in the nation in Zachary Evans from Houston, TX.  Rated the No. 1 running back and the No. 2 overall player in the nation, the 6-foot, 213-pound star is listed as the No. 34 all-time recruit since 247Sports has been rating prospects.

As such, he holds offers from virtually every program in the nation.  Last year, he ran for 1,483 yards and 27 touchdowns on just 184 carries (8.05 yards per carry).  So Tech obviously has no chance with such a highly-coveted player, right?

Probably not.  But there is one unique factor that Wells may be able to utilize.  There currently exists a strong connection between Texas Tech and Evans’ North Shore high school program.

In the 2019 class, Tech added defensive end Tony Bradford Jr. from North Shore’s 2019 6-A state championship team.  What’s more, Tech recently signed North Shore defensive line coach Mike O’Guin to be a graduate assistant with the Red Raider defensive line bringing another person familiar with Evans to Lubbock.

There’s no way to know how close Evans is with either Bradford or O’Guin but perhaps those relationships can get the Red Raiders in the door.  Still, it seems quite a long shot for Tech to land the No. 2 player in the nation.  However, this does show that Wells is aiming high on the recruiting trail, which is the only way he can expect to begin to improve the talent in his program.
