S Chris Thompson Jr. – Duncanville, TX

In the Big 12, a program can never have too many stars in the secondary and Texas Tech is after one of the top safeties in the class of 2020 in Duncanville, TX prospect Chris Thompson Jr.  The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder is rated the No. 5 safety in the nation and the No. 15 player in Texas.

Thompson holds offers from Alabama, Texas, A&M, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, TCU, Virginia Tech and a slew of other programs.  So needless to say, he would be a great addition for the Red Raiders.

Tech needs to find a way to improve a secondary that was abused in 2018.  Giving up more yards per game through the air than any team in the nation other than Oklahoma, the Red Raiders were repeatedly torched by opposing receivers.

Big receivers were certainly a problem last year.  Texas’ Lil’Jordan Humphrey went off for 159  yards and two touchdowns while Iowa State’s Hakeem Butler had 148 yards and a touchdown on just four receptions.

Thompson has the size to not only be a force in the run game, he could be able to match up with bigger receivers in the slot or help provide assistance to his corners down field while doing battle with big wide outs.

Tech had two very good safeties in 2018 but both Jah’Shawn Johnson and Vaughnte Dorsey were under 6-feet-tall making them susceptible when trying to guard tall receivers.  It would be tremendous if Tech could add some size to its secondary in upcoming classes and Chris Thompson Jr. would certainly fit that category.
