February 13, 1999: Texas Tech 90 – Kansas 84

Almost two decades before Trae Young mania took over the college basketball world, his father Rayford was a star guard at Texas Tech.  And in his junior season, the elder Young had one of the greatest performances in program history scoring 41 points to help the Red Raiders knock off No. 24 Kansas.   The game was the last truly memorable contest inside the old Lubbock Municipal Coliseum where the Red Raiders secured many huge wins in their home of nearly six decades.

What made Young’s performance even more remarkable was that the 5-foot-11 point guard went off for 32 points in the final nine minutes of the game.  His 41points stand as the eighth-most  any player has ever scored on the Jayhawks.

And making the story of Rayford Young’s greatest collegiate moment even more of a storybook ending is that Trae was on hand.  The elder Young talks about how after the game, he found his future wife and Trae’s mother in the mass of fans that had rushed the score but he had no idea where he son was.  Fortunately for the Young family, five-month-old Trae was safe in the arms of Rayford’s sister.

Rayford Young averaged 14.1 p.p.g. as a Red Raider and left the program as one of the most respected and popular players to ever wear the Double T.  And in the final season of the Coliseum, he had the game of his life to help the Red Raiders secure their first ever win over Kansas.
