Texas Tech football: Matt Wells needs to follow Chris Beard’s blueprint
Maintain a strong social media presence
At first glance, Chris Beard does not come across as the savvy social media user. However, he is active enough on Twitter that fans feel like were get a glimpse into his world and in 2019, that is a critical aspect of building a devoted fan base.
Beard has benefitted tremendously from the top-notch work done by the Texas Tech basketball social media team which turns out some of the best content of any college athletics program. The “fireside chats”, behind-the-scenes videos and the parody of a Sports Center commercial have been huge hits with Red Raider fans who can’t wait for another social media morsel to hold us over until the next game.

Beard’s Twitter use is not as prolific as that of a millennial but he certainly does not ignore social media. And when he tweets out pictures with his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, birthday wishes to his daughter or requests for prayers for Norense Odiase, he shows his human side further allowing fans to feel like he is the common man and someone we can relate too.

Meanwhile, in the four months of the 2018 college football season, Kliff Kingsbury tweeted twice. What’s more, the vast majority of his Tweets were retweets of content created by the football program’s video team. The most personal insight we got from a Kingsbury Tweet was him posing with the Wal-Mart yodeling kid or he and members of the 2011 Houston Cougars in ugly Christmas Sweaters.
Thus far, Wells has been a fantastic Twitter follow. He has posted or re-Tweeted nearly twenty times in the last week alone. Again, we know very little about our new head coach and one of the best ways Wells can begin to break down some of the walls that reluctant fans may have is by letting us see who he is by using social media.
It seems odd to suggest that a coach must pay so much attention to something that is an obsession of middle-schoolers. But while social media has little to do with the daily workings of a football program, it could be an important tool for Matt Wells to use as he begins the process of trying to win over the Texas Tech fan base.
