Defensive backs – Ryan Frank; Magnolia, Texas and Kennedale, Texas

More from Wreck'Em Red

One of the position groups set to be hit rather hard by graduation this offseason is the secondary.  With five seniors on the roster, including key players like Justus Parker, Douglas Coleman and Des Smith, Tech has to sign a full defensive back class in 2020.

One DB reporting an offer from Tech is Ryan Frank, a 3-star corner from Magnolia, Texas.  The 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect is the No. 151 player in Texas and the No. 86 corner in the nation.

He holds offers from eight schools including Oklahoma State, Colorado, Colorado State, Baylor, Utah and Tulsa.  What makes him an intriguing player is his height, which is something Tech fans want to see from future defensive backs after seeing the Red Raiders repeatedly burned by big, physical receivers over the past two years.

And though much of the focus is on the 2020 class, Wells and his staff are already working on one of the top safeties in the state for the class of 2021.  6-foot, 180-pound 4-star safety JD Coffey from Kennedale, Texas picked up an offer from the Red Raiders on Sunday.

Ranked the No. 6 safety in the nation and the No. 26 player in Texas for the class of 2021, Coffey already holds offers from Colorado, Florida, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Utah among others.  A 4-A all-state selection as a freshman, Coffey has registered 12 interceptions in his two-year varsity career.

Following the graduations of Jah’Shawn Johnson and Vaughnte Dorsey this offseason, the safety position will be one of the most intriguing to watch in fall camp.  It is believed that Justus Parker will get a shot to fill one of those spots but, as we said earlier, he will be gone by the time Coffey would arrive potentially clearing a path for a young player to step in next fall.

The Red Raiders were one of the worst teams in the nation against the pass last year giving up the second-most passing yards per game in the nation.  And Tech has struggled for years when it comes to generating takeaways on a consistent basis.  Landing a player of JD Coffey’s ability could go a long way in remedying both of those shortcomings.
