RHP – Bryce Bonnin

Closing out a team can be the most difficult task in sports.  Tech entered Sunday’s rematch with Dallas Baptist knowing that the Patriots were desperate to extend their season and force a winner-take-all game on Monday.

That’s why the heroics of Texas Tech sophomore starter Bryce Bonnin was so important.  The Mont Belvieu, Texas native did not allow a run in seven innings while giving up just three hits.  He struck out seven hitters, one shy of his career-high.

Thanks to the longest outing of his career, the transfer who played at Arkansas last year, moved to 6-1 and dropped his ERA to 4.28.  And he appears to be getting stronger as the season progresses as he has not allowed an earned run in three of his last five starts.

And after a disastrous first start as a Red Raider, Bonnin had to feel great about pitching his new team into the Super Regionals.  Back in February, he allowed six runs (4 eared) while walking four hitters and recording just one out against Oregon in the second game of the season.

If Tech is going to contend for a national title, Bonnin will need to continue to pitch well.  The Red Raiders have won nine of the eleven games in which he has appeared and if he pitches the way he did on Sunday, that trend should continue.
