The bottom of the lineup

In postseason baseball, it is critical for teams to receive production from the entire lineup.  And that’s exactly what Tim Tadlock’s team got against the Cowboys.

We have already talked about Parker’s heroics on Sunday from the No. 7 spot in the order but he was not the only hitter in the bottom third of the lineup to contribute.  In Saturday’s 6-5 loss, third baseman Dru Baker helped carry the offense with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored from the No. 8 spot.  And in game-one, catcher Braxton Fulford went 1-2 with two runs scored from the No. 9 hole.

In all, the bottom third of Tech’s lineup went 12-29 which is good for a .414 batting average.  What’s more, that portion of the lineup was responsible for seven RBI and nine runs scored.

All season, Tech’s offense has been fueled by the top six hitters in the order, all of whom are hitting over .300 for the year.  But the hitters at the bottom of the Red Raider lineup are no slouches.

Catcher Braxton Fulford has raised his averaged to .292, which is fantastic for a No. 9 hitter.  And Tanner O’Tremba is now hitting .267 after going 4-9 with three RBI in the NCAA Tournament.  The freshman may be playing a larger role in Omaha if right fielder and leadoff hitter Gabe Holt is unable to play.  The spark plug of the order missed Sunday’s game after injuring his left hand in the ninth inning of Saturday’s loss as he slid into first base head-first.

We have seen in previous trips to Omaha that runs can be difficult to come by because the pitching the Red Raiders will face will be elite at times.  Thus, it will be critical for the bottom third of the order to continue to put together quality at-bats and give Texas Tech a level of production similar to what they provided against the Cowboys.
