DT Broderick Washington

While Jordyn Brooks is the quarterback of the Red Raider defense, the vocal leader on that side of the ball is senior defensive tackle Broderick Washington.  This year, he will also be one of the top defensive tackles in the country.

More from Wreck'Em Red

The former high school offensive lineman has 99 career tackles and five sacks.  Last season, his 41 tackles led all Red Raider defensive linemen and he was credited with three sacks to earn honorable-mention all-conference honors.

What’s more, his junior season numbers compared favorably to the two 2018 first-team All-Big 12 defensive tackles.  TCU’s L.J. Collier had 41 tackles and six sacks while Kansas’ Daniel Wise had just 34 tackles to go along with five sacks.

Apparently, the key for Washington to earn All-Big 12 honors will be for him to increase his sack total.  Fortunately, he will be the anchor of Tech’s aggressive new 3-man defensive line which will put a greater emphasis on getting to the passer.

Certainly, Tech is going need Washington to collapse the middle of the pocket and be a true pass-rush force.  That’s because and DE Eli Howard are the only defensive linemen on the roster with more than 1.5 career sacks now that DT Joe Wallace has left the program.

Also, there’s not a ton of proven depth behind Washington on the roster so he will be on the field as much as he can stand.  Given that, his stat totals could be at an all-time high which would make him a strong all-conference candidate.
