TE John Holcomb from Wellington

There must be something in the water up in tiny Wellington, Texas.  How else could you explain a town of just over 2,000 people producing two huge college football prospects in back-to-back years?

In February, 6-foot-11, 340-pound OT Trevor Roberson signed with the Red Raiders and hopefully, his teammate John Holcomb will follow in his footsteps.  Though Holcomb is not nearly as imposing as Roberson, at 6-foot-4, 220-pounds, he is already a very big high school tight end with the frame to easily put on plenty of extra muscle.

Rated a 3-star 2020 prospect by 247Sports, he holds offers from SMU, Indiana, Kansas, North Texas, and others.  But, despite being the No. 31 tight end in the nation and the No. 111 player in Texas, he is yet to receive an offer from the Red Raiders.

Most expect that to change given that every other tight end Tech has offered has already committed to other schools. That includes another West Texas tight end, Jalin Conyers, a 4-star player from Gruver who is committed to Oklahoma.

Tech is going to take a tight end in this class.  There is little depth at the position on the roster right now being as the previous coaching staff did not utilize tight ends.

A multi-sport athlete who runs a sub 4.6 40-yard-dash, Holcomb appears to be the type of athlete that would thrive in offensive coordinator David Yost’s system.  If (and when) Tech extends an offer, most believe he will join Roberson in bringing two of the best small-school players West Texas has seen in recent years to Lubbock.
