RB: Timmy Smith, Sadale Foster, Tre King

The out of state running back trio would be headlined by a player who had one of the most dominant Super Bowl performances of all time.  In 1988’s Super Bowl XXII, Hobbs, NM native Timmy Smith ran for a Super Bowl record 204 yards while finding the endzone twice as the Washington Redskins took down the Denver Broncos 42-10.

The all-time leading rusher in New Mexico high school history when he signed with Tech in 1982, Smith had what could have been a solid college career limited by injury problems.  After playing in just one game in 1982 before he earned a redshirt, Smith tallied 1,313 yards and eight touchdowns as a Red Raider.

In 1984, he had a career-high 711 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore.  Unfortunately, a broken ankle cut short his senior season of 1986 when he carried the ball only seven times.

In the NFL, he proved to be a one-hit-wonder as he amassed only 603 career yards and three touchdowns never coming close to the dominance he showed in Super Bowl XXII.  Still, there’s no denying that the 5-foot-11, 216-pounder had plenty of talent and could be capable of being a solid performer for the out of state roster.

Backing him up would be Tre King from Wichita, Kansas.  After signing with Tech out of Hutchinson Community College, he ran for a combined 783 yards and six touchdowns in 2017-18.

Also on this roster would be Sadele Foster from Riverside, California.  The JUCO signee ran for 642 yards and five touchdowns combined in 2012-13.

unfortunately. there have been some big-time running back recruits from out of state that did not pan out for the Red Raiders.  In 2012, 4-star recruit and New Mexico’s all-time leading rusher Ronnie Daniels was kicked off the team after a failed drug test.

In 2007, Tech signed the No. 1 running back and No. 4 player in Oklahoma, Harrison Jeffers.  But the former 4-star recruit never made an impact in Lubbock rushing for only 316 yards and four touchdowns in a two-year Red Raider career.

It will be interesting to see what current Red Raider running back Armand Shyne, an Oakland, California native, will bring to the field this year.  The grad transfer from Utah is expected to be a regular in what will likely be a three-back rotation in the backfield.
