Jett Duffey may be the better option at QB for this year’s team

Saturday’s performance by QB Jett Duffey was the best we’ve seen from a Tech QB this year.  So even if Alan Bowman returns from his left shoulder injury, perhaps Duffey gives this team a better shot at winning.

More from Wreck'Em Red

The last time we saw Bowman, he played one of the poorest games of his career.  He completed just 54.5% of his passes, was picked off twice, and had a QB rating of just 31.6 while leading his offense to a mere 14 points against a statistically poor Arizona defense.

Meanwhile, Duffey completed 59.1% of his passes on Saturday with four touchdown passes, a rushing TD, and no picks.  His QB rating was a sterling 79.9.

Even with a healthy Bowman leading the way, Tech’s offense looked disjointed and lackluster in two games against FBS teams.  His timing looked off and he appeared to be rattled at times when his protection broke down.  Whether or not that was a result of a lingering mental hangup following his two collapsed lungs last year, only Bowman knows.

But Duffey played with a type of poise that we’ve not seen from him at any point of his career nor have we seen from Bowman this year.  Also, we should keep in mind that the OSU pass rush may be the worst in the Big 12 so the fact that Duffey was seldom under duress on Saturday is not an indication that he won’t have to use his legs to escape trouble down the road.

We learned following Saturday’s game that junior right guard and preseason All-Big 12 selection Jack Anderson will miss the remainder of the year.  So the line may remain an area of concern and weakness.

That could mean Duffey will be more equipped to lead the offense.  It seems like heresy to suggest that Bowman should have to worry about losing his gig to Jett Duffey.  But the QB we saw leading the Red Raider offense on Saturday was the best QB we’ve seen sport the Double-T this year.
