Texas Tech may be in worse shape overall than any program in the conference

At first glance, it may seem ridiculous to suggest that Tech is in worse overall shape than any Big 12 team.  After all, one loss to KU doesn’t mean the overall health of the program has dropped below that of the Jayhawks….right?

Well, in terms of facilities and financial support, Tech football is still miles ahead of KU.  But that would be the only program that has it significantly worse than Tech.

The Red Raiders have fallen behind other programs when it comes to the quality of the coaches’ offices, meeting rooms, and player amenities in the endless peeing competition is the college football arms race.  That’s why the football training facility is next up for renovation rather than the south endzone of Jones Stadium.

The state of affairs on the field is not promising yet either.  That’s where the Red Raiders could also be falling behind just about everyone.

After ranking no higher than 6th in the conference in recruiting rankings since 2015, the talent on the roster has slipped below that of other programs.  What’s more, it has dipped rather sharply in recent years finishing 10th in the Big 12 in 2018 and just 8th in 2019.

Currently, Tech is sitting at just 7th in the league in the 2020 class rankings which means that another bottom-three finish could be in store.  Of course, the attitude of the fan base is also at it’s lowest point since the late 1990s, something that isn’t being helped by a 3-5 start to the Wells era.  It’s frightening to think that without us really noticing, the Red Raiders have failed to keep pace with most of their conference rivals in the aspects of the program that many people don’t think about all that often but which are critical for success.
