The 2020 Texas Tech recruiting class is almost finished

Ramsey is the second player in the class of 2020 to commit to the Red Raiders joining Chibuzo Agbo Jr., a four-star recruit from San Diego, State.  That means there is only one scholarship open for next year as it stands at this point.

Next year’s class is going to be small when compared to the five-player class Beard signed in 2019.  But given that there are only two seniors on the team, we aren’t likely to see the type of turnover that we saw this past offseason when the program saw nine players depart.

If the current roster remains intact, which is rare in the modern era of college basketball, Beard will have only one more spot to fill next year.  He currently has an open scholarship that is not being used this season to go along with the two that will open when grad transfers T.J. Holyfield and Chris Clarke graduate.

Tuesday, we will find out if 5-star guard Nimari Burnett from Chicago will be the player to fill that spot.  The No. 22 player in the nation, he is expected to announce his decision between Tech, Oregon, Michigan, and Alabama and the Red Raiders are considered by many to be in great shape.

If that recruiting battle doesn’t go Tech’s way, don’t be surprised to see it be kept open until next summer so that Beard can bring in another grad transfer.  Valuing age and experience, Beard will likely want to add another senior to next year’s team to go along with Davide Moretti.

Of course, it would surprise no one if this team sees a player decide to leave the program in search of more playing time or to be closer to home.  That’s been the case every year that Beard has been in Lubbock as the coach is always churning his roster in an attempt to elevate his overall talent.

But with Peavy already locked in, it is going to be a rather quiet recruiting cycle this year and that may open the coaching staff up to pursue top targets in the 2021 class such as Jonathan Kuminga, the No. 1 player in the nation who is the brother of current Red Raider Joel Ntambwe.  It has to feel great for this current staff to already have 2/3 of their class sowed up before this month’s early signing date and if they receive good news on Tuesday, they could have the entire group locked up before Thanksgiving.
