Texas Tech obviously needs two more wins to get to a bowl game

It will be beneficial for Texas Tech’s bowl hopes to get this win in the boat.  That’s no secret.  But stop to consider just how much of a boost simply reaching six wins could be for this program.

After the humiliating loss to Kansas in Lawrence, Tech was sitting at just 2-5 and 1-3 in Big 12 play with dwindling hopes for a successful season and everyone in Lubbock already turning their attention and emotional equity towards basketball season.  But beat the Frogs and Matt Wells’ team will have two shots to get its sixth win in the next two weeks.

Frankly, the bar is lower this season than it is in most years.  There’s no other way around it.  Coming off 3-straight losing seasons and having missed a bowl in two of those years, just getting to a 13th game in what is a transition season for this coaching staff would be impressive.

It would also be a significant first step in Wells’ rebuilding efforts.  There’s no way he is going to win over the entire fan base this soon (especially after the controversy that recently came to light regarding a Title IX investigation from his time at Utah State) but a bowl birth would be a huge start.

Not only would it signify that this program has taken a step forward from the final year of the Kliff Kingsbury era, but it would also help generate some positive will and good vibes headed into the offseason and next year.

Certainly, beating TCU will not get Tech all the way to six wins but losing almost certainly prevents that from happening.  Each of the final two opponents, Kansas State and Texas, are better than TCU and better than the Red Raiders on paper and asking Tech to go 2-0 to get to a bowl is a bit more than this team appears capable of.

At the start of this year, it was thought that a bowl game appearance was the minimum requirement for a good season.  That’s why beating the Frogs is important as it comes to the immediate future of the program.
