No more 11 am kickoffs

For the next nine months, the hour of 11 am on Saturdays can go back to belonging to youth sports, community service projects, and hangovers without those pesky Big 12 football games getting in the way.

It’s really sad to think about how defiled 11 am on a Saturday has become by the conference’s love of that time slot for football games.

That’s actually a time when the most beautiful part of the weekend should be in full effect.  Coming off a morning with no work and still looking at 36 hours of freedom, life should be full of joy and possibilities at 11 am on Saturday.

But to ask college football fans to show up for an 11 am kickoff seems to be something akin to asking someone to stand next to a campfire after being doused in gasoline.  Though we all seem to make it to work, or class, or church by 11 am each day with no problems and no complaining, apparently, it is just too much to get to the corner of Marsha Sharp and University by 11 am on a Saturday.

Rejoice Tech fans because there are no more 11 am kickoffs in our future for nine months.  There are two 11 am tipoffs in Lubbock this year (against Oklahoma State on Jan. 4 and Texas on February 29th) but there’s no doubt that we will all be able to find our way to the U.S.A. at 11 am to support Coach Beard.

So next Saturday at 11 am, raise a beer, cheer on your kids during their soccer game, catch a few extra Zs, or do whatever in the world you please.  Just enjoy one of the best parts of the week knowing that it won’t be ruined by another kick in the groin courtesy of the Texas Tech football program.
