Texas Tech basketball: Scouting the West Virginia mountaineers
WVU is far from being a top-tier offensive team
It is essential for the Mountaineers to get tons of second-chance points because they are a poor shooting team overall. Prone to long scoring droughts, the Mountaineers are just 7th in the Big 12 in scoring at 71.8 points per game, almost four p.p.g. less than Tech averages.
As a team, they shoot just 42.7%, which is 8th in the conference. When you consider that the two big men shoot 53.4% between them, it illustrates how poorly the rest of the team shoots.
From outside, WVU is hitting at only a 30.7% rate, better than only Oklahoma State in the Big 12. And because they don’t make a ton of shots and get a huge portion of their offense off of rebounds, they are just 8th in the Big 12 in assists at 12.7 per game.
Also depressing the WVU offense is the fact that they turn the ball over more than any team in the Big 12, 14.9 times per game. That could be good news for a Tech team that forces 16.7 per game, the second-most in of any conference team.
Texas Tech needs to find a way to make this game all about the WVU guards. Outside of the two big men we discussed previously, no player on their roster is scoring in double figures and their best 3-point shooter, Sean McNeil, has made only 18 3s this year. That’s ten fewer than both Davide Moretti and Jahmi’us Ramsey have made this year and equal to Kyler Edwards’ total.
