Leading scorer Jahmi’us Ramsey has regained his shooting touch

Perhaps the most important improvement this team has seen over the last week has been the recent play of leading scorer Jahmi’us Ramsey.  After struggling for the better part of January, he has had two fantastic games against top-15 teams in his last two outings.

In his last game, Ramsey led the Red Raiders with 26 points against Kansas thanks in large part to a 5-8 effort from behind the arc.  That helped offset a rather inefficient shooting day from two-point range.

It was his second-straight game to be on fire from long distance.  Agast West Virginia on Wednesday he was also 5-8 from 3-point range as he was one of three Red Raiders with at least 20 points.

Thus, in his last two games, against elite teams, he has shot 10-16 (62.5%) from downtown.  That comes on the heels of an awful shooting stretch.

After making five of his ten 3-point shots against Baylor on January 7th, Ramsey went just 3-21 (14.2%) over the next five games.  That proved to be a huge problem for a Red Raider team that has come to rely rather heavily on Ramsey’s outside shot.

In those five games, he scored no more than 15 points (against TCU) while putting up two single-digit games.  That was equal to the total of single-digit scoring games he had produced for the rest of the season.

This team is equipped with a range of players that can all carry the offense on a nightly basis.  We’ve seen Kyler Edwards, Davide Moretti, Terrence Shannon, and even T.J. Holyfield be the offensive stars at times this season.

But Jahmi’us Ramsey is arguably this season’s best all-around scorer and he certainly has the highest ceiling of any player on the current roster.  If he continues to play at a level near what we’ve seen over the last week, it will bode well for the Red Raiders in February.
