DT Albert Regis

The final prospect we will look at today is Albert Regis, an athletic defensive tackle from La Porte, Texas.  The 6-foot-2, 260-pounder is a two-way HS player who was an all-district tight end in 2019.

But his future in the college ranks is along the defensive front.  Ranked the No. 38 DT in America and the No. 98 player in Texas, he would be a key building block of the 2021 class for Matt Wells.

Regis picked up an offer from Tech about a week ago.  He also has offers from Baylor, Houston, Illinois, TCU, Tennessee, and others.

His size indicates that he could move around the defensive line depending on the situation.  That’s something that Patterson covets.

When it comes to solid rotational pieces, Tech is in good shape.  Jaylon Hutchings, Nelson Mbanasor, Tony Bradford Jr., Gilbert Ibeneme, and 2020 JUCO signee Devon Drew all have at least two years of eligibility remaining.

But much like defensive back and offensive line, d-line is a place where there is no such thing as too many quality options.  Last year, we saw how Tech’s front seven routinely lost steam as the game progressed due to a lack of depth.

Most notably was the Arizona loss in week three.  That night, the Wildcats ran the ball on the final 21 plays of the game over the last two possessions to bleed the clock dry and an undermanned Red Raider defensive line could do nothing about it.

But if Wells can continue to add players the caliber of Regis, we could finally put days such as we saw in Tucson behind us.  This year, Tech will lose Eli Howard and Nick McCann along the defensive line, two players expected to be significant contributors in 2020.  That’s why replacing them with prospects such as Regis will be one of Wells’ most important tasks.
