Texas Tech football: Early 2021 recruiting targets to watch
Safety Isaiah Nwokobia
Texas Tech desperately needs to get better in the secondary. That was painfully obvious in 2019 when the Red Raiders fielded the worst pass defense in the Big 12 and third-to worst in the entire nation.
Dallas, Texas target Isaiah Nwokobia would be a significant addition at the safety position should Tech bring him on board. He picked up an offer from Wells in January at junior day and this is a player to keep an eye on.
A large defensive back at 6-foot, 187-pounds already, he’s the 31 safety in his class and the No. 73 player in Texas. His offer list includes Cal, Texas, Arkansas, Boise State, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Texas and USC.
Nwokobia also runs track for Skyline H.S. and should he put on much more weight once he gets into a college strength and conditioning program, he could easily slide down into the spur position for defensive coordinator Keith Patterson giving Tech some fantastic athleticism at a position where versatility is crucial. The spur position is more of a combo safety/linebacker role which might be a natural home for someone of Nwokobia’s athleticism.
This year, Tech has some serious questions to answer at safety. Last year’s All-Big 12 performer Douglas Coleman has graduated and the other starter, Adrian Frye, was horrendous in his first year after making the move from corner.
This is a position that Wells has invested in rather heavily as compared to other spots on the roster. Of course, in the Big 12, programs can’t have too many defensive backs so Nwokobia is a name to watch.
