SS Cal Conley stars at the plate

Coming into the year, most expected Miami transfer Cal Conley to be a fantastic defensive shortstop, and that’s come to fruition thus far.  But he’s also been one of this team’s best hitters as was the case against Rice.

Over the weekend, Conley was 6-13 with seven RBI.  That included five big RBI on Saturday night.

His RBI triple to center in the fourth brought home Jace Jung to cut Tech’s deficit to 8-2.  That would be the first of eleven unanswered runs Tech would plate in the game to take an eventual 12-8 lead by the end of the sixth.  In that game, he also had a sacrifice fly, a two-RBI single, and an RBI double to pace Tech’s comeback.

On Sunday, he again was the catalyst for a comeback.  With Tech trailing 4-0 in the first, Conley drove in Dylan Neuse on a double to right to get Tech on the board.  In the fifth, he was credited with an RBI on a fielder’s choice that allowed Dillon Carter to cut the Rice lead to 4-2.

Of the Red Raider regulars, Conley’s .397 batting average trails only Brian Klien’s .415 average.  What’s more, he leads the team with a 1.149 on-base percentage.

He’s also third on the team with 25 hits, just one behind both Klein and Neuse, while his 23 RBI trails only the 27 of Nate Rombach.  Also, he’s even proven to have more pop in his bat than we expected as his three homers are good for third on the roster.

As we started thinking about what this team could be in 2020, we all believed that Cal Conley was going to be an essential piece of the puzzle.  But most expected his greatest contributions to come in the field where he had the reputation as a slick fielder.  Thus far though, he’s also proven to be a weapon when holding a bat and this weekend, he was the driving force of the Red Raider offense.
