Will Davide Moretti return?

Ramsey isn’t the only player that could take his game to the professional level this offseason.  There’s also a chance that Davide Moretti could forego his senior season and play professionally in his native Europe, specifically Italy where his father is a professional basketball coach.

There hasn’t been a ton of buzz about Moretti as an NBA prospect because his ability to create his own offense doesn’t seem to be where it would need to be at that level of the game.  But he could still be in line for a huge payday in Europe where many former NCAA stars have had lucrative careers.

This season, Moretti was second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game but his shooting percentages fell significantly.  After shooting 48.9% from three-point range a season ago, he managed to shoot just 38.3% this year as he was a greater focus of opposing defenses while also being asked to shoulder more of the all-around offensive load.

It feels like Moretti’s game isn’t going to take a giant leap forward next year the way it did between his freshman and sophomore seasons when his scoring rose eight points per game. Thus, if he believes he’s nearing the ceiling of his talent, he might want to cash in on his opportunities to play professionally back home.

However, he is also a fierce competitor who has come within a whisper of winning a national title and he might want to give it one last run next year.  Could the fact that Tech figures to be one of the Big 12 favorites in 2021 be enough to entice Moretti to come back?

Consider how impactful it would be to the Red Raiders if both Ramsey and Moretti go pro.  That would mean Beard would have to replace two players that accounted for 127 of the 224 three-point baskets his team made this season.  In the end, it feels like Moretti will return to try to help lead his team to the promised land and if he does, he will go down as one of the true legends of the program.
