Will there be any players that transfer?

It still feels a bit unusual in the world of college basketball, but Chris Beard has made the habit of churning the bottom of his roster every year to try to upgrade the overall talent at his disposal.  But this year, there aren’t any obvious transfer candidates because every player that was on this year’s team has the look of a potential contributor.

Guard Clarence Nadolny, Techewa, and forward Andrei Savrasov were the three players that played the least this season.  In fact, all three freshmen averaged fewer than six minutes per game.

But all showed signs of being able to eventually help this program out.  Techewa’s size and above-average athleticism is tough to replace, Nadolny has the street-dog mentality that Beard loves, and Savrasov has a beautiful outside jumper, which makes him a tough matchup at 6-foot-7.

Still, it would seem highly likely that at least one of these players moves on.  That’s because if Tech is going to add another high school signee (Kuminga?) or a grad transfer, Beard is going have to open up a scholarship.

Currently, Tech is set to have just two players leave the program for certain, (Holyfield and Clarke) and there is one scholarship that was not used this year.  Thus, the three players already signed (Burnett, Micah Peavy, and Chibuzo Agbo) will fill up the open scholarships.

Of course, if Ramsey or Moretti leaves, that would open up another spot.  But even should that come to pass, it would seem safe to assume that Beard will add more than one more piece this offseason meaning that an open scholarship has to come from somewhere.

Without having any inside information, if I had to put my money on one player that would seek opportunities elsewhere, it would be Savrasov.  He looked the farthest away from being ready to contribute as he often looked overwhelmed by the speed and intensity of the Big 12 game.  Either way, it will be worth watching to see how Beard churns the bottom of the roster as has become customary in the modern age of the transfer portal.
