Tech battling Big 10 and Big East schools for Wichita State guard Jamarius Burton

Another player with Texas on his radar is Jamarius Burton.  The 6-foot-4 North Carolina native just completed his sophomore year at Wichita State averaging 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game.

Of course, he would likely have to sit out the upcoming season unless he is granted an immediate eligibility waiver.  But should he come to Tech, perhaps it would be best for the program if he were to redshirt this season to help alleviate the playing time log jam that could arise given the impressive talent already on the roster.

This week, Burton announced on Twitter that he has cut his list of potential schools to Tech, Xavier, Seaton Hall, Marquette, and Ohio State.  That’s a formidable group of programs that Beard will have to recruit against.

"“As a player who is extremely versatile on both ends of the floor,” writes Brian Snow of 247Sports “Burton is a unique talent who should be able to fit in with about any system. He is a big-bodied guard who can get to the rim, is a solid passer, and also brings toughness on defense.”"

This past season, Burton scored in double-digits 18 times in 30 games played.  That included a season-high of 18 in the second game of the season against Tennessee-Martin and a nice 16-point game against then No. 21 Memphis.

"“Now I am paying attention more to the coach’s personality, style of play, looking at the system, and I am watching film,” he told Snow. “I didn’t watch film in my recruitment the first time, I just trusted what the coaches said.” “I am also looking closely at player development. How guys have gotten better with their shooting percentages and bodies, stuff like that. I am taking a deeper and better approach this time around.”"

If player development is a key for Burton, Tech could have an advantage given the way Beard has helped both Zharie Smith and Jarret Culver become first-round NBA Draft picks while also taking the games of transfers Matt Mooney and Tariq Owens to new levels.  Should Burton want to maximize his game, there’s reason to believe that Beard would be the best option for him but only time will tell if he agrees.
