19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists @ Iowa State

Though we didn’t know it at the time, Tech’s 87-57 drubbing of Iowa State in Ames would be the final win of the year for Chris Beard’s team.  In that game, Edwards was fantastic with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists to again finish as his team’s second-leading scorer, this time trailing only Jahmi’us Ramsey and his 25 points.

In fact, when you figure in the 10 points that T.J. Holyfield scored, the three Red Raiders in double-digits came within just three points of equaling Iowa State’s entire team on the scoreboard.  It’s rare to see the Cyclones humiliated on their own floor but that’s what Tech did in late February.

Also shooting 7-10 from the floor that day, Edwards was 2-4 from deep and 3-3 at the free-throw line.  That performance was the final in a six-game run that saw him reach double-digits each game.  It would also be his final double-digit scoring output of the season.

In fact, that stretch of the season was Edwards’ most consistent.  From the OU game on February 4th to this game on February 22, he averaged 14.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 46.7% from 3-point range.  That’s the type of player we need to see on a more regular basis next season and beyond.

It was one of two six-game streaks of double-digit scoring from Edwards.  But outside of those two stretches, he hit double figures just five times.  When the team relies as heavily on a player as it did Edwards this season, it has to know that it can expect that player to be more of a nightly factor.

This year, there were too many times when Edwards was a no-show or even an offensive liability.  If he can be more consistent next year, it will be a sign that he’s taken another important step in his continued development.
