Texas Tech football: Unpleasant streaks that need to end in 2020

5-game home losing streak to Texas

Nothing will garner more goodwill for Matt Wells (at least on an individual game basis) in 2020 than beating Texas in Lubbock.  Regardless of the sport, nothing brings more joy to the South Plains than beating the Longhorns but that’s something Texas Tech football fans haven’t celebrated at home since 2008.  You might remember that game.

When Tom Herman brings his team to Jones Stadium on October 24, UT will be looking for its sixth-straight win in Lubbock.  Already holding the longest win-streak in Lubbock in the storied history of Texas football, the Horns will want to once again revel in the role of the victorious villain in what is one of their toughest road trips given that they don’t ever have to play in Norman and they no longer play Texas A&M.

Tech came close to toppling UT in 2018 but a last-minute TD by the Horns sealed the 41-34 game after Tech erased a 17-point second-half lead.  Two years earlier, trailing 45-38 Pat Mahomes was intercepted in the endzone late in the 4th quarter as Tech was attempting to tie the game.

In 2016, Mahomes was a true freshman making his first career start when UT came to Lubbock.  Sadly, he was knocked out of the game in the first quarter with a concussion forcing Vincent Testaverde into emergency action.  The results were not pretty as Tech fell 34-13.

In 2012’s 31-22 UT win and 2010’s 24-14 Texas triumph, the Red Raider offense was stymied.  Thus, the last time we saw the hated Horns leave the Caprock dejected was when Graham Harrell hit Michael Crabtree with one second to play for the 39-33 win in 2008.

Wells is a coach that has yet to win over the hearts of the majority of his constituency.  Beating Texas in Lubbock this year would be the best way for him to start to do just that and if he does, 2020 could be a surprisingly good year for his team.
