Brandon Bouyer-Randle

Texas Tech football has not had many transfers from the Big 10.  That’s why Michigan State transfer Brandon Bouyer-Randle is a player that is a newcomer many are excited to see.

Tech needs help on defense.  That’s no secret.  Therefore, bringing in a player from a conference where defense is king is something that sounds like a great idea.

Of course, it could be argued that the reason the Big 10 defenses are so successful is that many of the programs in that league run rudimentary offensive schemes.  But for decades, Michigan State football has been synonymous with excellent defense.  So it’s worth hoping that some of that pedigree comes with Bouyer-Randle from East Lansing to the Hub City.

In three years, the Michigan native never quite had the impact that Spartan fans hoped.  He had 31 tackles with 21 coming in 2018.  Last year, he saw action in only four games before deciding to transfer.

The encouraging part is that he has 4.5 sacks to his name.  That’s a skill that Red Raider fans are desperate for Wells to add more of to the roster.

It’s fair to admit that there is always a reason that a player is in the transfer portal.  It’s almost unheard of to see an all-conference player go that route and when programs invest too heavily in that method of talent acquisition, there is a risk that any injury history or just lack of production that was problematic at a player’s previous stop will derail the plans their new team has for them.

Still, Red Raider fans are excited about the thought of a Big 10 defender joining the Red Raiders is exciting.  Thus, we will be keeping a close eye on No. 2 on the defensive side of the ball this fall.
