John Scott III

John Scott III may not be ready to play this fall.  But if he is, the moment he steps on the field will be one of the year’s most special.

That’s because last summer, the defensive lineman nearly lost his life after being shot at a Lubbock apartment complex pool party. According to arrest warrants for the gunman, Asia Jackson, when he was shot, Scott was attempting to diffuse a situation during which Jackson was upset about being splashed by water guns at the poolside.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound lineman spent several days in the ICU before being released.  But his 2019 season was spent just trying to recover physically to the point that he was able to resume normal conditioning activities.

A year later, Scott could be ready to play football again.  He was back to working out with the team at the start of spring practice but was being eased into the mix.  Thus, the loss of the spring was especially damaging to his comeback.

We can’t count on the sophomore to play a key role in the two-deep this year.  After all, he has yet to play a snap for the Red Raiders after redshirting as a true freshman.  Additionally, he may not be able to handle that from either a football or a physical standpoint.

But there is a shot that in one of this season’s blowouts, hopefully in a comfortable win at home, Scott will return to the field.  Should that happen, it will be one of the most special moments of the year.
