No. 4: Jackson and Zeno 2006-07

Another Texas Tech basketball team that got to the first round of the NCAA Tournament only to lose to Boston College was the 2006-07 team.  Led by Jarrius Jackson and Martin Zeno, the Red Raiders went 21-13 to earn the No. 10 seed in the East Region.

That duo did about as much for their team as any in Tech history.  Averaging a combined 36.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game, they both put up at least seven points more than any other player on the roster.

What’s more, there weren’t any other all-time Texas Tech greats on that year’s team to help support Jackon and Zeno.  Alan Voskuil would go on to be a 1,000-point scorer in his career but that season, he mustered just 4.2 p.p.g. as a sophomore.

Darryl Dora might be the only other name on that year’s team that most Tech fans would remember.  But as a senior, he averaged just 5.0 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in what was his second-lowest scoring campaign as a collegiate.

That year, in only six of the 34 games did a player other than Jackson or Zeno lead the Red Raiders in scoring.  Also, Zeno led the team in rebounds and assists.

But it was Jackson who was the star.  20 times that year, he scored 20 or more points.  That included three games of 30 points or more.  Along the way, he earned his second-straight All-Big 12 first-team honor.

It’s too bad that this duo was not surrounded by more talent than they were because Jackson and Zeno were special players.  And later on this list, we will see what they could accomplish when one more star was on the floor with them.
