No. 6: Lone Star Pride 2014

Trying to do too much for a theme was what doomed the 2014 Lone Star Pride uniforms.  Worn in a loss at home to Texas, the threads were an attempt to pay homage to the Lone Star State.  While they did that, they took attention away from the Texas Tech aspect of the logo.

As we’ve said already, a color that is not part of the school’s color scheme has no place on the uniform.  That was especially true of the blue from the Texas flag design that adorned the helmet and right sleeve of the jerseys.  It was a startling sight to see blue, a color that could not be more opposite of red, on the uniform of the Red Raiders.

What’s more, blue was also found on the Texas flag that ran across the left thigh in something that looked like a patch that a creative middle school girl had sown onto her pants.  Even the cleats that night were blue at the top before fading to red near the sole.

Then there was the much-discussed logo.  Featuring the Double T inside the state of Texas, the logo on the uniforms for this game was less than pleasing to many fans who felt the state logo was more important that the Double T was in this concept.

Some felt like the idea to try to throw the Lone Star Pride uniforms into the rotation when the Red Raiders played Texas was a bit of a stretch at trying to claim the state as theirs.  You can’t do that with a themed uniform.

The only way you can do that is to start to beat the state’s only blue-blood on a regular basis.  Of course, Tech hasn’t managed to do so with any consistency in the last two decades and 2014’s 34-13 loss was another setback to the Horns.  Making matters worse were the clownish uniforms the home team wore that night.
