How will he fix the depth problem at RB?

The other position on offense that has Tech fans losing sleep is running back.  That’s because there is currently only one scholarship RB on campus, SaRodorick Thompson, and one on the way, true freshman Tahj Brooks.

But even with both in the mix in 2020, Tech needs to add at least one more quality player, one who can tote the rock the moment he arrives.  After all, we learned in 2019 that even three scholarship RBs is often not enough to make it through a season.

Mosely was also well aware of that fact and he asked Wells how he will address this positional need.

"“Certainly, you’re right, we are a little thin there.  We’re still trying to see if we can get that showed up over the summer with one more guy.  But you know I think SaRodrick Thompson has a bright bright future here at Texas Tech.  He is strong, he’s mentally tough, he played injured a good little portion down the stretch last year.  One game he played every single snap at running back because of depth issues.  I’ve never had a running back do that. I think he’s gonna have a great career in the big 12 the next three years but we certainly do need to sure that up.  Then our true freshman Tahj Brooks from Manor, right there in central Texas.  [He needs] to be ready to come in to contribute right out the gate.”"

What stands out here is the fact that Wells admitted that he wants to add one more piece again this summer.  That’s not a surprise but it is confirmation of the program’s lack of depth at a position that almost always seems to suffer casualties throughout the season.

Last year, it was the grad transfer market that brought RB Armand Shyne from Utah and he was able to help until he missed the final six games of the season with broken ribs.  He applied for a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA but that request was denied.

Making matters worse was the fact that Tech saw junior RB Taz’Hawn Henry head back to his hometown of Houston this offseason to play for the Cougars.  That leaves a gaping hole at RB and Tech needs to find some way to bring in one more insurance policy there before August arrives.
