No. 2: Zach Thomas era black on black on silver

Though our No. 2 uniform combination breaks one of my uniform rules, it is a look that is one of the best the Texas Tech football program has ever worn.  Yes, the Zach Thomas era uniforms featured silver pants, which is not one of the official school colors, but when put below black helmets and jerseys, the silver gave Tech a distinctive and intimidating appearance.

Normally, I would argue that a color like silver or gray should be only used as an accent color, perhaps used in number shadows or piping down the pants.  But in this uniform combination, it works as the contrast to the black on the top half of the uniform.

Tech actually wore black on black on gray for the first time in program history back in last fall’s season opener against Montana State.  While that was not an awful decision, it didn’t work as well as it used to with the silver pants from the mid-1990s because the gray was very dark and didn’t really stand out against the black.

Tech has gone back to this fantastic look in recent years.  It was first brought back in 2014 at home against Arkansas and since, it has been a fan-favorite.  But we want to see more of it.  In fact, there should be one home game per year that Tech brings this look out for all the fans who came of age watching those classic Spike Dykes teams of 25 years ago.

The black on silver gives these uniforms a look that is both intimidating yet also futuristic as not many teams were going with sliver when Tech rolled the silver pants out for the first time; especially not teams that didn’t have silver as one of their official school colors.  (Kansas State was doing that but being as they wear purple jerseys, everything else is ruined because purple is one of the worst colors a sports team can wear.)

This uniform combination has always made me think of the Terminator movie franchise because the sliver is reminiscent of the liquid form that T-1000 would take in Terminator 2.  And like that classic movie franchise, these uniforms were ahead of their time.
