No. 9: Red on black on white

Another look that featured the red helmets is Tech’s red helmets on black jerseys over white pants.  In this look, both of the school’s primary colors are featured which satisfies fans who prefer either.

Some people think that the black uniforms at the best Tech wears.  That’s especially true of fans who came to love the program in the Zach Thomas or the Kliff Kingsbury years.

Thus, they have to love the black jerseys that this combination gives them.  There’s just something about the shade of black that makes players look more dominating and this uniform combo gives the Red Raiders that appearance.

Meanwhile, there’s a huge contingency of the fan base that feels like the Red Raiders should always wear red as a primary color.  In fact, during the Kingsbury playing years, those fans were not happy that the only red on the uniform was the Double T on the helmets and some small accent lines.

Likewise, that part of the Tech populace has to be encouraged to see the school’s primary color at the top of this look.  And like we discussed previously, the red helmets stand out, especially when set up against the black uniforms.

This was the combo that Tech wore in 2018 when they faced West Virginia in Lubbock.  That was another time when the red helmets didn’t bring Tech luck.  Despite a valiant comeback attempt, the home team fell to the Mountaineers 42-34 in the game that saw starting QB Alan Bowman sustain his first of two collapsed lung injuries of his freshman season.
