No. 8: Black on black on white

Texas Tech football fans have come to associate the black helmets with the program since at least the 1980s.  And when they sit atop black jerseys and white pants, Tech has one of the most pleasing to the eye uniform combos in the game.

Often, the most simple of college football uniforms are the ones that look the best.  That’s the case for Penn State, Oklahoma, and USC among others and when Tech goes with this look, it is about as close to classic simplicity that the Red Raiders ever come.

Granted, the modern accents at the shoulder and down the legs take some of the simplicity out of the equation.  You wouldn’t find that on a Penn State uniform.

But regardless, Tech comes close to an old school vibe in this color scheme.  And putting black over white is always appeasing from a uniform standpoint.

There are no two shades more beautifully contrasting in the world of uniforms and when they are together, they give the look of clean lines and defined segments.  It is the opposite of the awful ombre uniforms Tech wore twice in 2013.

Those concept uniforms tried to have one color blend into another and it simply didn’t work.  Sports fans like definition.  After all, we expect clearly established rules and guidelines and when we don’t get those, we become upset.  That’s why this look works so well.  It clearly defines the top of the uniform from the bottom in a way that street clothes do for us in the real world and it brings the Tech’s uniforms close to beautiful simplicity.
