Texas Tech football: Counting down the Red Raiders’ best uniform combos of all-time
No. 3: 1990s black on red on black
From 1993-2012, Texas Tech went without any type of stripe down the middle of the helmet. It was only the second time in program history that there was no stripe on the helmet shell. The other was from 1964-69.
While the stripe down the middle gives the helmet an ornate look that is appealing, taking it away makes the black helmets look tougher. It makes the team have a no-frills type of appearance and that’s a great way to describe the uniforms of the 1990s.
When those tough-looking lids were then put on top of a basic red jersey and black pants, The Red Raiders had an old-school look that was close to what the program wore in the earliest days of Texas Tech football.
There have been other versions of the black on red on black look throughout program history but this one stands out, though it’s hard to put a finger on why. Perhaps it’s because the bright red is a perfect contrast to the rugged black helmet, which has been stripped of its decorative aspects.
But whatever the reason, this is a look that needs to be Tech’s next throwback. Whereas the special occasion uniforms were cartoonish and ill-conceived, the Red Raiders have been applauded for almost every throwback they’ve worn in the last decade. But this look hasn’t been one and that needs to change because it is a classic uniform from a period when Red Raider football took on a no-frills attitude.
