OSU QB Spencer Sanders is poised to make a huge jump

We all know about Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard, who is widely considered the best RB in the nation.  But for the Cowboys to have one of the best offenses in the country, as many are suggesting they might, redshirt sophomore QB Spencer Sanders needs to take a step forward.

If you subscribe to the theory that the greatest gains that a player makes come between his freshman and sophomore seasons, then you would have to buy stock in Sanders now and that’s why Texas Tech football fans should get to know this dynamic athlete.  Last year, he was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year after throwing for 2,065 yards and 16 TDs while rushing for 628 more yards and a pair of scores.

But at times, he couldn’t corral his elite athleticism, and his propensity for channeling his inner Johnny Manziel and running around like a headless chicken got him in trouble.  And never was he worse than in Lubbock.

In Tech’s 45-35 win in early October, Sanders threw three picks and lost two fumbles.  It was a huge learning moment for the youngster who was making just his second Big 12 start.

But if the game starts to slow down in Sanders’ head, watch out.  That’s because his body is already faster than almost any defender.

Around Sanders will be arguably the best collection of skill-position talent in the conference with Hubbard and receivers Tylan Wallace and Dillon Stoner all coming back.  In fact, OSU returns 19 starters from last year’s team that won 8 games.   So while Hubbard and Wallace are the household names in Stillwater, don’t be fooled, Spencer Sanders is the most important player on Mike Gundy‘s team.  If he figures it out this season, OSU could be playing for the Big 12 Title.
