Texas Tech football: The best home seasons in Red Raider history
1973
Prior to 1995, it was had been two decades since Tech had put forth a perfect home record. In fact, the 1973 season remains just the fourth most recent perfect mark the program has posted in Lubbock.
Not even the SWC Championship 1976 team was able to remain unscathed at home thanks to a loss to Houston. But the 1973 team, which went 11-1 and beat No. 20 Tennessee in the Gator Bowl, beat Utah, New Mexico, A&M, SMU, Rice, and Baylor in Lubbock to go 6-0.
Interestingly, all of those wins but the 41-7 win over New Mexico and the 55-24 win over Baylor, were contentious. Beating Utah 29-22 to open the year, beating Texas A&M 28-16, beating SMU 31-14, and beating Rice 19-6, the Red Raiders may have caused the home fans to have some prematurely appearing gray hairs.
It’s also worth noting that this was not the toughest home schedule in program history. None of the six visitors to The Jones were ranked and Tech would only face two ranked teams all regular-season, No. 19 Arizona and No. 14 Texas.
Tech finished the regular season 10-1 and in second place in the conference behind Texas. Seven weeks the Red Raiders spent in the top 20 including the final six of the season. And with a final ranking of No. 11 in the nation, this was one of the best teams in program history and one reason was a perfect home slate.
