Saturday, the Texas Tech football team gave us a much-needed distraction by showing us a glimpse of the tweaks the program has made to its uniforms.
Everyone loves to discuss football uniforms. So thankfully, on Saturday the Texas Tech football program gave us a first look at the changes that have been made to the game-day looks the Red Raiders will sport. It was a welcome distraction from the current global pandemic and a bit of a welcome reprieve from the worry over whether or not there will even be a 2020 season.
To put it simply, Tech appears to be going back to basics with the new threads. Gone are the decorative piping that went across the front of the shoulders leaving the front of the inform clean.
There does appear to be some minor piping on the side of the shoulders, beneath a Double T, but other than that, the jerseys are simple. No major changes to the helmets were visible on the previews that Tech gave us
Down the side of the pants, there is also some piping. But unlike some in years in the recent past, it goes straight down the leg to the bottom of the pants and does not curve toward the knee. It appears that on every set of pants, the piping is two-toned and is comprised of the two other school colors that don’t make up the base color of the pants. (For example, the red pants have white and black piping on them and so on.)
If there is one critique that most fans have, it would be the shoulders. It is strange to have your school logo so prominently displayed less than a foot from where it is displayed again on the side of the helmet. Also, many fans don’t seem to be all that pleased with the “v” shaped stripes on the shoulders, which resemble the stripes that were on the front of last year’s uniforms.
The stripe on the pants is also a bit wider than what would look best. I might also like to see the top color on the stripe extend down further than just the top of the hip.
On the other hand, the removal of the slogan “Guns Up” from the pants seems to be drawing high praise. So too is the fact that the new looks are a step back towards simplicity after Tech tried too hard to have cutting edge uniforms for much of the Under Armour era.
Of course, no design is going to please every fan. But hopefully, the players find these uniforms pleasing.
One who seems to be on board with them is senior corner, Zech McPhearson. He replied to the above tweet with a fire emoji followed “100”.

Of course, all that matters is how the team played in them. If Tech finds a way to turn the program’s fortunes around and play like a Big 12 contender while wearing these threads, they will instantly become one of the most beloved uniforms in program history. But as for now, everyone has an opinion. Still, for at least a day, it was nice to have something else to discuss other than a pandemic.
