1998: Montae Reagor

A year later, Tech posted another 7-5 mark on the way to earning a birth in the Independence Bowl.  And once again, Montae Reagor was the team’s best player.

With 96 tackles (a massive total for a defensive end), seven sacks, and 19 tackles for loss, the Waxahachie, Texas native was a dominant force along the d-line.  He once-again earned consensus first-team All-American honors as one of the best defensive players in the game.

After that season, Reagor was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.  His professional football career would last nine years.

During that time, he would amass 116 career tackles and 17 sacks.  Most importantly, he was part of the Super Bowl XLI champion Indianapolis Colts roster in 2007.

He finished his career atop Texas Tech’s career sacks list with 25.5, a number that stood until Aaron Hunt broke it in 2002.  Still, Reagor has right to claim to be Tech’s best defensive end (as he played in an era when teams threw the ball far less than they do now or even in Hunt’s era thus limiting the number of sack opportunities he had) and as both a junior and senior, he was without question his team’s best player.
